Platelet activation in a simplified 3D-model of arteriovenous fistula

The computational results for the mathematical model of platelet activation in arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis are shown. A simplified three-dimensional fistula model with severe stenosis was used.

Platelet activation occurs in areas where the highest shear stresses are achieved. The formation of activated platelets can lead to both the rapid formation of a thrombus that blocks the flow through the fistula vein, and to the development of delocalized thrombotic lesions that can dramatically disrupt the functioning of organs downstream.
